Summer Attendance Lags

Throughout the summer our attendance has been lagging behind the average, and a few times fell into the single digits. We persevered and recently more members have been present to eat, greet and participate in the proceedings. Now that school is back in sessions, rather early it seems, we can expect a lively cord to eat, greet and sing, win contests, hear speakers and help fund youth activities. A refreshing thought, don't you think? Meanwhile, put Wednesday Noons on your calendar.

Board of Director

After conducting a survey of members, the board decided to schedule one evening social meeting per quarter. Hopefully, this will allow members who can't attend noon meetings often to meet and greet fellow optimists.

Recuperating

Ted Stoup is reportedly recovering very well after his knee replacement surgery.

Recent Guest Speakers

Recent guest speakers have included Andrew Antonio, director of Outreach and International Programs for the Lafayette Indiana Vocational & Technical College, and Ernesto Castellanos, a second-year student assistant from Mexico. Andrew said the programs include outreach and international programs, a student ambassador program, an office of engagement, an exchange program for faculty for and students to go abroad and international agricultural field experience.

Castellanos said the programs at IVY Tech offer a great opportunity for more one-on-one learning activities. He specifically listed leadership skills, including salesmanship. Ernesto, who is working for IVY Teck full-time, has been studying chemistry and pre-medicine. He plans to attend Indiana University to study medicine, with the goal of becoming a plastic surgeon.

Nick Schenkel spoke twice during the summer. He gave a book report on William Least Heat Moon's latest book, Blue Highways, a story about a 1950's family making plans to drive across Kansas and Oklahoma, enroute from Missouri to Colorado. On another Wednesday, Schenkel and Scott Tracey, assistant reference librarian at West Lafayette's Public Library, talked about "The Public Library in the Age of High Technology."

Dan Collins brought Charles Shook and Doug Guteridge who talked about how the community can plan for the next generation. Clare Lutgen, Oakland High School principal, who talked about the purpose and potential for the new "school of choice."

Becky Chapman "Left Her Heart in Paris", but twice talked about her trips and shared here pots and books of Europe, including France and Germany.
